Voice Over Internet Protocol Server

11.1 Introduction

VoIP (Voice over IP) is a new technology that enables voice communication over packet switched networks such as the Internet using the Internet Protocol (IP).

Real time vocal communication through Rainmail Server to anyone connected to internet. With VoIP mechanism you can talk all the time with every person you want (the needed is that other person is also connected to Internet at the same time), as far as you want (money independent) and, in addition, you can talk with many people at the same time. At the same time, you can exchange data with people you are talking with, sending images, graphs and videos.

"Rainmail Server" supports PC-to-PC voice communication and can also support other types of communications (PC-to-Telephone, Telephone-to-PC, Telephone-to-Telephone) with additional hardware. However, kindly note that some of the above communication mechanisms may not be legal in your region and you will have to check with your local authorities beofre enabling these technologies.

To carry a PC-to-PC voice conversation, your administrator must enable VoIP communication. Once enabled, you can use clients like "Netmeeting" or "Openphone" to carry out a voice conversation.

11.2 System requirements

To create a VoIP system you need the following hardware:

Under Win9x we have Microsoft NetMeeting and OpenPhone.

11.3 Using netmeeting

Microsoft NetMeeting is a Windows-based application that enables multi-user interaction and collaboration from a single PC over the Internet or an intranet. Clients or gateways can connect directly with one another if the destination IP address of the other client or gateway is reachable.

11.3.1 Configuration

To configure Microsoft NetMeeting to work with the VoIP gateway, use the following procedure:

  1. Start NetMeeting. You will see the following screen:

  2. From the Tools Menu click Options... to open the Options window.
  3. In the Options window, click the General Tab. In the My directory information section ,

  4. Enter your first name (in this case Jaya) in the First name field.
  5. Enter your last name ( in this case uma) in the Last Name field.
  6. Enter the e-mail address (uma@carizen.com) in the Email address field.
  7. Enter the location in the location field (in this case chennai).
  8. Now Click Advanced Calling... button to open the Advanced Calling Options window.

  9. In Advance Calling Options dialog,

    1. Check Use a gatekeeper to place calls check box.
    2. Enter the IP address of the VoIP gatekeeper. This is same as IP address of your "Rainmail Server" (in this case 192.168.1.22 ) or the computer name in the Gatekeeper field.
    3. Check Log on using my account name check box.
    4. Enter the account name in the Account name field. This is same as your account name in RIS.
    5. Click OK.

11.3.2 Making A Call

To initiate a call using Microsoft NetMeeting, perform the following steps.

  1. From the Microsoft NetMeeting application, enter either Email-Address or Telephone Number or IP address or Computer Name ( in this case murali) in the Address bar.
  2. Click the Call icon (telephone) to initiate a call.

  3. Once the connection is established the screen will look like this and the status line will indicate In a call.

  4. If the gatekeeper times out you have to place a call again. Once the connection is established you can start using the netmeeting.
  5. Click the Chat button to open the chat window.
    1. In the Message box type a message in the message box and click Send button.
    2. In the Send To list box choosing Everyone In Chat will send the message to everyone in the chat.

  6. Similarly you can share program, use the whiteboard , exchange files and create a call link to web pages.

11.3.3 Hanging up

When you hang up, others in the meeting are not necessarily disconnected from each other. If two people in the meeting have an audio or video connection, their connection will continue. If someone has called you in the meeting, his or her connection is maintained as long as yours is. When you leave the meeting, or are disconnected from it, that person is disconnected also.

 

11.4 Finding people logged in for talking

  1. In Netmeeting, there is an option to specify the login name.
  2. Once this is set, each location will be logged in to the server using that.
  3. Rainmail software will show who is currently logged on.
  4. In the Intranet page click the hyperlink Directory of persons logged in for VoIP call.



  5. Rainmail software will show who is currently logged on.

  6. They can then connect to user by name and chat.
  7. If two or three calls are initiated to same account, the first one which is answered is accepted. One can also have a conference call if required.

11.5 Using openphone

Openphone is a Windows-based application that enables multi-user interaction and collaboration from a single PC over the Internet or an intranet. Clients or gateways can connect directly with one another if the destination IP address of the other client or gateway is reachable.

11.5.1 Making a call

  1. Open openphone. From the Call menu click Make Call.

  2. In the Make Call dialog box,
    1. Enter the IP address of the machine or Telephone number you wish to call in the Address field ( in this case 4958228)
    2. Enter the gateway address in the Gateway field. This is the same as IP address of your RIS (in this case 192.168.1.13).
    3. Click OK.

    11.5.2 Hanging Up

    1. When the call is through you can start speaking.

    2. Click HangUp to disconnect the call.
