Network Information
As your company grows, your LAN will grow. Rainmail Server helps you take control of your network in a centralized location. Adding and moving machines in the LAN is as simple as clicking on a few items and adding some information. Each machine in your LAN is identified by an unique address (called an IP address of the form "192.168.1.1") and a name. When you add or remove a machine from your LAN, you will need to enter that information using the nodes in this section. In addition to keeping a list of all the machines on your network, Rainmail Server acts as a "Name Server" which maps from names of machine in your LAN to IP addresses and vice-versa. Your Rainmail Server also caches mappings between machines and IP addresses of the machines you have visited recently on the Internet. This speeds up your Internet access.
When "Rainmail Server" is installed, it gives a default name of "server" to the machine it is installed on. You may want to change this name to something more meaningful or in accordance with your corporate policy.

The current Internet connection will not be affected in anyway by this change.
6.3 Specify IP address and Network Class
"Rainmail Server" needs to be assigned an IP address to interact with rest of your internal network. When installed, Rainmail Server picks up the IP address of the machine and you normally do not need to change it. However, there might be circumstances (like reorganization) wherein you would want to change the IP address and network class of your "Rainmail Server". In these cases, it does not suffice to use the OS function to change the IP address. You need to make use of this screen to change the IP address so that all information is updated appropriately.

Any machine on your LAN needs an unique IP address through which it can be identified. Rainmail Server automatically generates an IP address for your new machine. This ensures optimal use of your available IP addresses. Adding a machine to your LAN has two parts. The first part consists of adding information about the new machine to Rainmail Server. The second part consists of setting properties of the new machine so that it can access the Rainmail Server. We will look at both the parts in this help.
