Backup

8.1 Introduction

Performing regular backups should be considered one of a responsible system administrator's top priorities. Although Linux is an extremely reliable operating system, failures can, do, and probably will occur. They may be caused by hardware failure, power outrages, or other unforeseen problems. More likely will be those problems caused by human error, resulting in undesired changes to, or even deletions of, crucial files. If you are hosting users on your system, you will most certainly be requested to restore an inadvertently deleted file or two. You can use backup to make a reserve copy of any valuable Rainmail Server data on your system. The best way to protect your data is to take backup. A standard installation of Linux has a built-in tool by the name of tar.

8.2 Take Backup

To backup, bring up the configuration program and select "Take Backup " from the left hand side panel. This will bring up the following screen:

Press "Take Backup" button. The data will be backed up as a single tar file in the form of "backupyearmonthdate.tgz", which is stored in the backup directory of the user administrator. Successful completion is indicated by a dialog.

8.2 Restore Backup

The one thing that is more important than performing regular backups is having them available when it comes time to recover an important file.To restore data, bring up the configuration program and select "Restore Backup " from the left hand side panel. This will bring up the following screen:

Press "Restore Backup" button. The data will be restored from the recent backup file which is stored in the backup directory of the user administrator. Successful completion is indicated by a dialog.

8.3 Restore User Mail Backup - Mail

The one thing that is more important than performing regular backups is having them available when it comes time to recover an important file.To restore data, bring up the configuration program and select "Restore User Mail Backup " from the left hand side panel. This will bring up the following screen:

Select the user Email ID from the "User Email ID" list box. Press "Restore User Mail Backup" button. The data will be restored from the recent backup file which is stored in the backup directory of the user administrator. Successful completion is indicated by a dialog.
